Burl Jelks, 84, Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024. He was born on September 13, 1939, in Live Oak, Florida, and was a Locomotive Engineer for forty years with Florida East Coast Railway. Burl was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of twenty-five years, Grace E. Jelks; children, David B. Jelks (Dionne), Jessica J. Jelks, Cedrick B. Jelks, and Cameron D. Jelks; step-daughters, Valarie Mincey (Quin) and Deborah Finklea; brothers, Hayward Jelks (Everlene), Larry Jelks (Lettie), and Lawrence Jelks (Minnie); sister, Benita Jelks; thirteen grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, as well as other family members, and friends.
In his 70s Burl dedicated his life to God and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He faithfully served in the Highlands Congregation for many years.
Burl was preceded in death by his father, Handy Jelks; mother, Margaret Philpot Jelks; sister, Carolyn Jelks Hines; and brother, James “Robert” Jelks.
